As a long-distance touring motorcycle, it was introduced in 1969 as an enlarged version of the V7 specifically for the American market. It was highly regarded for its reliability, low-maintenance shaft drive, and unique design.
The Ambassador was produced between 1969 and 1972 It featured an air-cooled, 90-degree V-twin engine mounted longitudinally in the frame, a configuration that became iconic for the brand. It was successful in the U.S. and was even the basis for a police motorcycle designed in consultation with the Los Angeles Police Department. The Ambassador was the first production motorcycle to feature electric starting only, without a kick lever. The success of the Ambassador helped propel Moto Guzzi sales to a production record in 1971 and established the brand’s reputation for making durable, capable touring bikes. The engine and frame design formed the foundation for many subsequent successful models, including the V7 Sport and the long-running California range.
